Foresight Dialogues will be releasing a podcast this weekend unpacking the mechanisms behind this sobering reality.
The chart below highlights a structural shift that has quietly defined the modern economy: real GDP has grown, but real wages have barely moved. Much of the difference has instead flowed into financial assets, property, and commodities.
In other words, the system increasingly channels liquidity and economic gains through asset markets first, rewarding ownership more than labour. Assets have effectively “become a circuit amongst the wealthy” – those already positioned inside the financial system.
This weekend’s episode will be a livewire debate exploring how this process works, who benefits from it, and why modern economies have become so dependent on rising asset prices to maintain the illusion of stability and growth.
Stay tuned.
